Association Schemes: a Short Course
(Marzo 2005)

Abstract. These are the notes for a four week course held in Rome in February-March 2005. The syllabus was:

Week 1
What association schemes are: definitions and examples, including distance-regular graphs, Hamming schemes, and schemes based on Abelian groups. Creating new association schemes as products of two smaller schemes.

Week 2
The Bose-Mesner algebra, including the character table. Applications to parameters of strongly regular graphs.

Week 3
Partially balanced incomplete block designs, including the statistician's view of what a block design is and topics such as the variance of the estimator of the difference between two treatments.

Week 4
Orthogonal block structures, including those based on (a) groups and subgroups (b) partially ordered sets.
