Mostly Maximum Principle

4th edition From 30th May to 3rd June 2022

Home

Cortona The scope of this meeting is to gather researchers interested in the study of elliptic and parabolic equations via the Maximum Principle. This conference will be in spirit a sequel to the conferences Positivity: a key to fully - nonlinear equations (Vietri 2010), Mostly Maximum Principle (Roma 2012, Agropoli 2015 and Banff 2017). This edition will be held at the Palazzone (Cortona, Italy). This series has started as a relatively small gathering of high level mathematicians working in areas related with the maximum principle, and has expanded in themes and number of participants, but without diminishing the level of the mathematicians involved and without losing the original spirit. The maximum principle arises in so many instances and problems that we cannot hope to cover them all. During the Conference, we will mainly focus on the following aspects:

  • Comparison principle and spectral properties

  • Hamilton-Jacobi equations

  • Liouville type results

  • Minimal surfaces

  • Parabolic equations: asymptotic analysis, traveling fronts

  • Qualitative properties such as symmetry, lack of symmetry, overdetermined problems

  • Regularity of solutions for fully nonlinear operators be they elliptic, degenerate elliptic, local or non local

Information

Rules to access to the Palazzone: due to the pandemic situation, a Covid-19 vaccination certificate or a recovery certificate is required to access to Palazzone (the so called Green Pass rafforzato is needed). Surgical or FFP2 masks are mandatory (DL n. 24, 24/3/2022). Please fill out the registration form below or contact the organizers if you would like to attend: you will not be allowed into the Palazzone if your name is not on the list of participants.

Reaching Cortona

By train and buses

We recommend the railway station Camucia-Cortona (3 km to Cortona) for train travel from Florence. Please note that in the Camucia-Cortona station one can only buy kilometer tickets from a machine. We recommend the railway station Terontola-Cortona (9 km to Cortona) for train travel from Rome. Camucia-Cortona and Terontola-Cortona railway stations are connected by hourly buses to the Piazza Mercato, just outside Cortona's walls. For the schedule see here. Bus tickets cannot be bought on the buses themselves. Taxis can be hired from the railway stations of Camucia and Terontola, or in the centre of Cortona in Piazza della Repubblica.

By flight

The closest airport is Florence, but for inter-continental flights is Rome. Another option is Pisa. From there, continue by train.

Accomodation

Hotel Le Contesse (ex Hotel Oasi Neumann)

Monastero della SS. Trinità (Monache Cistercensi)

B&Bs

We suggest to look for accomodations near the center, see for instance here.

Reaching the Conference

The Palazzone is located outside the massive ancient town walls of Cortona, and can be reached by walking away from the center of Cortona (about 1,5 Km).

Visiting Cortona

The center

The itinerary will take you through the many palaces, churches and monuments that are to be found in this ancient walled town. Here it is a possible itinerary.

Museo Diocesano

You can visit the Museo Diocesano, where the Annunciation and the Triptych by Beato Angelico, the Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Signorelli, The Lady of the Assumption Gives St Thomas Her Belt by Bartolomeo della Gatta are exposed. Information are in English language here.

Lake Trasimeno

The lake Trasimeno is pretty close to Cortona (about 15 minutes by car, and 30 minutes by bus). For more information follow this link.
