Guido Castelnuovo: l'uomo e lo scienziato

Abstract. Guido Castelnuovo (1865-1952) is one of the most outstanding personalities in the Italian school of Algebraic Geometry, he himself had contributed to found. His long life allowed him to be a testimony and a protagonist of the most significant events in Italy after its unification. Starting from the first years of the 20th century he oriented his mathematical interests towards Probability, Statistics, Actuarial Mathematics, Physics, History of Mathematics and Teaching. This paper goes through his life focusing on the aspects which seem to be particularly significant in understanding the evolution of his scientific interests.
