Assegno di Ricerca:

Dispersive PDEs and Spectral Methods

We are opening a 2-years position in Roma, La Sapienza University, Department of Mathematics.
The official call is in Italian; this page is an additional service for non Italian candidates.

Description
  • Project topic: Dispersive PDEs and Spectral Methods, funded by the MUR PRIN project "Hamiltonian and Dispersive PDEs" and led by Piero D'Ancona. The Candidate should have familiarity with the field of Linear and Nonlinear Dispersive Equations (Schrodinger, wave, Dirac and similar equations) and related methods (Spectral Theory, Scattering Theory, Dispersive Estimates). Some research experience in this field will be a preferential title.
  • Duration: 24 months
  • Gross salary: 30000 EUR/year before taxes
  • Starting date: probably the end of January. (We plan to finish the selection procedure by the end of the year. Additional delay may be caused by the burocratic steps following the competition)
  • Deadline: November 12, 2022
Eligibility criteria
A Master's Degree in Mathematics is mandatory. A PhD in Mathematics is not mandatory but a preferential title (and supersedes the requirement of a Master's Degree).

Informally, the Ideal Candidate has recently finished a PhD in a topic related to the field of Dispersive Equations. One strict requirement to get the grant is not to benefit from other comparable grants at the same time, including a PhD salary. This means that if the winner of the grant is still finishing a PhD, the PhD can be continued but the winner should give up the PhD salary when accepting the grant.
How to apply
  • Follow the link to the official call. Besides the call itself ("Bando AR n. 4/2022") and standard info on privacy issues ("Informativa all'interessato...") there are 4 forms to fill ("Allegato A", "Allegato B", "Allegato C", "Allegato D").
  • To help non Italian speakers I prepared LaTeX versions of the four forms, with some explanation in english. Please download the 4 files, fill in the info, print, sign (with date) and scan to pdf:
  • Other documents to enclose with the application:
    • Copy of ID or Passport (signed and dated)
    • Curriculum Vitae
    • Research works, if available
    • (Not mandatory: a copy of PhD certificate, or in alternative, of Master's Degree certificate. This may speed up the following burocratic steps)
How to submit the application
READ WITH CARE. There are two methods:
  • Send the pdf files by certified email (PEC) to the address matematica@cert.uniroma1.it with subject "CANDIDATURA ALLA PROCEDURA COMPARATIVA - BANDO AR n. 4/2022"
  • Copy the pdf files on a USB pen, put the pen in an envelope, write on the envelope "CANDIDATURA ALLA PROCEDURA COMPARATIVA - BANDO AR n. 4/2022" (besides your name), and send the envelope, via registered mail with return receipt, to
Direttore del Dipartimento di Matematica Guido Castelnuovo
    Sapienza Universita' di Roma
    P.le Aldo Moro, 5
    00185 Roma.
Sorry about this inconvenient procedure (I am pushing to modify it).

The email method is easier, quicker and cheaper but requires to have a certified email address (called a PEC email in Italy). Such an address is offered by many Italian providers, with low prices (~ 5 or 6 EUR per year; there are even cheaper ones). For instance, I checked that the Provider ARUBA is open to registrations from non Italian countries, at the following link: ARUBA SIGNUP. In case you have trouble with this I can help you (email me at dancona AT mat.uniroma1.it)
Selection stages
  • Stage 1: a Committee evaluates the applications received. The outcome is a shortlist of Candidates
  • Stage 2: the same Committee interviews the shortlisted Candidates remotely, and a final decision is reached at the end of the interviews
