Aims and scopes

The goal of the school is to offer a general overview of the recent techniques used in the field of optimal control for partial differential equations. A special emphasis will be given to the numerical solution of the large scale optimization problems which are typical in this area and to the methods for model reduction which allow to solve real problems, e.g. in the control of fluids and in optimal design. The school is mainly directed to PhD students, post-docs and young researchers in the areas of pdes, control and numerical analysis who would like to enter the field of optimal control of PDEs. To this end the school wants to present several techniques and point of views on this topic bringing together lectures on different aspects.

Courses

The will be four mini-courses of about 6 hours each:

INTRODUCTION TO OPTIMAL CONTROL PROBLEMS FOR PDEs
      J. Sprekels (WIAS, Berlin)

NUMERICAL METHODS FOR OPTIMAL CONTROL OF PDEs
      R. Hoppe (Augsburg and Houston University)

      MODEL REDUCTION METHODS
      M. Grepl (Aachen) and G. Rozza (EPFL, Lousanne)

      SHAPE OPTIMIZATION
      F. Jouve (Paris VII )

The school will start on Monday at 9am and will end on Friday, late in the afternoon.
Depending on the financial support available, we plan to organize also some seminars devoted to applications (approximately 4 seminars) in various fields: fluiddynamics, chemistry, optimal design, phase-transition,.... The contacts for the seminars are still on going and the final list will be announced on this page.

Organization

The four mini-courses will be tought in the mornings so that there will be time available for informal discussions and other research activities. We plan to organize one sessions of short communications (about 20 min). If you intend to present a short communication please check the box in the application form and send a short Latex abstract (max 1 page) to the organizers at cortona10@mat.uniroma1.it before March 31, 2010.

List of participants

List of contributed Talks

Please use the Latex form which is available through the WEB page. Be aware that the number of partecipants is limited to 40, so if you intend to partecipate fill the form as soon as possible. The organizers will not accept registrations made after March 31, 2010.
All the activities will be held at the Palazzone della Scuola Normale Superiore in the countryside of Cortona (about 3 km from the center). More informations about the place can be found at the site http://www.cortonaweb.net.

Financial support

The school can (partially) support young participants who will not have access to other research funds. If you need financial support write to cortona10@mat.uniroma1.it indicating the amount you need and send to the organizers your up-dated CV and at least one recommendation letter (possibly as pdf files attached to the message). Please indicate the following subject in your e-mail "Request for financial support". The request should arrive before March 31, 2010.

Travel and accomodation

The informations to organize your trip can be found at http://www.cortonaweb.net and http://www.ferroviedellostato.it.
Cortona is located in Tuscany on the hills near the Trasimeno lake. If you plan to fly the most convenient airports are: Florence, Pisa, Bologna and Rome (international). The Cortona station (whose name is Terontola-Cortona) is on the line Roma-Firenze-Milano and is located down the hill, you must take a bus or a taxi to reach Cortona. Before buying the train ticket check that your train makes a stop in Terontola-Cortona.

Bus connections   (WARNING: the bus will NOT bring you to the Palazzone)
from Terontola to Cortona
    17:32 circa
                              from Camucia to Cortona
    16:03
    17:43
    19:58 (is the last one)

Taxi
Perhaps the best way is to get a taxi. Here are the name and telephone numbers of the taxi drivers in Cortona
    Pesci Giorgio 360 957648
    Adreani Enzo 335 8196313
    Sorvillo Francesco 338 8371243
    Caleri Albino 368 7386544
    Iacomi Roberto 349 0828093
    Prvulovic Dejan 346 4023501

How to reach the Palazzone from Cortona
The Palazzone is at walking distance from the center of Cortona (about 20 min).
To reach the Palazzone you should walk down the hill following via Gino Severini, then there is a bifurcation and you should keep the road on the left (via del Palazzone). You will find first the hotel "Oasi Neumann" and after 500 m the main gate giving access to the garden of the Palazzone.
There are signs indicating the Palazzone along the road.
You can get a precise map from Google Maps.
